The Demon vs The Beast at Great Balls Of Fire?

With Braun Strowman undergoing elbow surgery this week that looks set to keep him out of action for a momentum-destroying few months (two rather than the kayfabed six that WWE are shouting from the rooftops), all future storyline plans involving him have had to be changed. Strowman was set to battle WWE Universal Champion Brock Lesnar at whimsically named July pay-per-view Great Balls of Fire in a first-ever meeting between the two powerhouses, but the injury has caused a reshuffle to the card.

Instead, at Extreme Rules, Roman Reigns, Finn Balor, Seth Rollins, Bray Wyatt, and Samoa Joe will compete in a five-way, with the winner going onto Great Balls of Fire to face Lesnar. With Reigns set to meet Lesnar in the main event of WrestleMania 34, he is unlikely to work with Brock on a B-show supercard prior to that. Wyatt and Joe don’t really fit the bill due to their heel leanings (though Wyatt does have history with Brock), which leaves Rollins and Balor. Rollins vs Lesnar already been done, while Balor vs Lesnar is a completely fresh match-up which could bring out the best in Brock – who has fallen into something of a holding pattern as of late.

The Beast vs. The Demon at GBOF makes sense. Balor was the first ever Universal Champion and he never lost the belt, forced instead to give it up due to an injury sustained during his title winning bout against Seth Rollins at SummerSlam 2016. If Lesnar beats Balor it solidifies his reign and position as rightful champion, whereas if Balor wins it will further establish him as one of WWE’s top-tier stars.
